OZONE DAY 2018 - KEEP COOL AND CARRY ON.

 

Mission Statement 

To effectively control, monitor and eventually phase out remaining consumption of Ozone Depleting Substances through strong collaboration between the National Ozone Unit and the National Ozone Committee, advisory groups, Government Ministries, private sector, non-governmental organizations and other relevant actors in order to comply with the relevant provisions under the Montreal Protocol.  

 


Background 

The National Ozone Unit (NOU) was established in 1997 to fulfil Samoa’s obligations under the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. Samoa became a party of the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol in 1992 and ratified all amendments that came thereafter. The NOU was later approved to be a Section under the Meteorology Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2013 and it is now called the Ozone Section. 


Section functions and areas of work

  • The National Ozone Unit monitors the importation of Ozone  depleting substances (ODS) through licensing of ODS importing Companies in Samoa

  • Enforce the Ozone Layer Protection Regulations 2006

  • Monitor ODS importing companies and Refrigeration and Air conditioning (RAC) Sector through physical inspections

  • Collect ODS consumption data and report to the Ozone Secretariat

  • Conduct training for RAC technicians on good refrigeration practices

  • Conduct training and workshop for enforcement officers such as Customs and Quarantine officers monitoring border control

  • Implement awareness activities to promote ozone layer protection
